GAIL DENDY (formerly SAUL)
Matric year: 1973

Gail Dendy is the author of seven poetry collections, the latest being Closer Than That, published by Dye Hard Press. She was first published by Harold Pinter in 1993, with her subsequent collections appearing in SA, the UK and the US. Her poetry and more recently, short stories, are regularly published in journals and anthologies.

An internationally trained dancer, she helped pioneer Contemporary Dance in SA between the late 1970s and the early 1990s. Other passions are environmental- and animal-rights issues. She lives in Johannesburg with her husband, pets, a law library, and a huge rock ’n roll collection.

DIANE KING
Matric year: 1990

Diane studied at the University of Natal and after completing a BSocSc Degree majoring in Marketing and Psychology, she left Durban in 1994 to au pair in America. After a brief return in 1995, she once more left for New York. She worked as the assistant to the owner of the Broadway Dance Center and when the opportunity arose to buy into the company, she did and is now the Executive Director of the dance studio that has been voted New York’s favourite dance studio for the fourth year running.

Broadway Dance Centre is open 7 days a week and offers over 200 different classes in everything from ballet, jazz/contemporary, theatre, taps and hip-hop/street style. On any given day, between 500 and 1000 students from around the world take classes from a faculty of around 80 professional dance teachers in the 5 separate studios. Broadway Dance Center is expanding with 2 further studios and an expanded clothing store.

LEDELLE MOE
Matric year: 1988

Ledelle Moe was born in Durban, South Africa in 1971. She studied sculpture at Technikon Natal and graduated in 1993. Active in the local art community, Moe was one of the founding members of the FLAT Gallery, an artist initiative and alternative space in Durban. A travel grant in 1994 brought her to the United States where she embarked on a period of study at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Sculpture Department Master's program. She completed her Master's Degree there in 1996 and soon after accepted an adjunct position in the Sculpture Department at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland. Later she taught at the Corcoran College of Art in Washington, DC, Virginia Commonwealth University and St.Mary's College of Maryland. Moe has exhibited in a number of venues including the Kulturhuset (Stockholm, Sweden) the NSA Gallery (Durban, South Africa), the International Sculpture Center (Washington, DC), The Washington Project for the Arts (Washington, DC) and Maryland Art Place (Baltimore). Though Moe remains strongly connected to South Africa, returning to visit annually, she has continued to live and work in the United States. Based presently far from home, the perspective particular to her roots as a South African artist remains central to her work. Recent projects include large-scale concrete installations at Socrates Park and Pratt Institute in New York City, and Decatur Blue in Washington, DC. In 2002 Moe was the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Award which has allowed her time to work on new sculptures and travel back to South Africa where she has made and exhibited work, Recent projects include two installations shown in Salzburg, Austria and Brooklyn, New York. Presently based in Baltimore, Maryland, she continues to work on large-scale pieces and travels home annually to work and visit in South Africa.

INES BUCCIMAZZA
Matric year: 1981

Ines is a Senior Specialist Surgeon and lecturer at the Department of Surgery - Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. Her Sub-specialty is Breast and Endocrine Surgery. She is the President of the Surgical Research Society of SA and council member of the Breast Surgeons International.
 
 
WENDY KNOWLER
Matric year: 1981

Wendy Knowler has 24 years’ experience as a journalist, mostly on newspapers in KwaZulu Natal. She’s currently consumer editor for the Independent Newspapers group. Her twice weekly consumer column – which tackles issues ranging from misleading advertising to crooked car deals, and the effects of the aggressive marketing of junk food to children – appears in the Star, Cape Times, Pretoria News and Daily News.
For the past five years, she has been investigating and presenting a weekly consumer show, Consumer Talk.
