OUR CHESS CHAMPION
January 2012

Tasnim is thrilled to have won the U16 girls title at the African Youth Chess Tournament, held in Zambia at the end of last year. She now holds the title 'Womens' Fide Master' after scoring 8.5 points out of 9.

Tasnim hopes to represent SA at the Slovenia World Youth Chess Championships later this year.

May 2011

Congratulations to Tasnim Amra (Grade 9BD), the Northlands chess ace who won the Durban and District Chess Championships held at the weekend. It is the third consecutive year that the National Under 16 Chess Champion has won the competition once again held at Northlands Girls' High School.

It has been a successful year for the Tasnim. In May she was awarded the title of `Woman Provincial Master' by the National Chess Body and in April was selected to represent South Africa at the World Youth Chess Championships in Brazil in November.

However, for now her sights are set on the Commonwealth Chess Championships which will take place in Johannesburg in July and the Africa Youth Chess Championships in Zambia in August.

SPORTSWOMEN'S DINNER
This year's Sportswomen's Dinner was very successful. The girls attended in formal wear and with impeccable behaviour, were the epitome of 'Poised for Excellence'.

The guest of honour was Leigh Balfour, a KZN Women's Softball A Team member. She gave an interesting and motivating speech and then presented the trophies to those girls who have excelled in their sport.

Trophies were awarded to the most committed and the most promising players in each age group of each sport and to the sport's most successful team.

A delicious lamb on the spit dinner added to the enjoyment of the night. Thanks to 100+ for helping to sponsor the event.

SOCCER STARS
The school’s 1st Soccer Team took gold at the Kingsway Inter-Schools Soccer Championships recently.

A tough draw saw them playing three group matches in a row. They made it through the group stage, to top their group. Their semi-final against Fatima was decided in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out which featured some heroic goal keeping and sure-footed scoring.

The Northlands girls faced Kloof High School in the final. They turned out to be a formidable opposition and once again, the outcome was decided by a penalty shoot-out. Nerves were on edge and there was much pacing and cheering from the sidelines by fellow team mates, family and staff. The goal keeping was superb and the talented team took gold, winning the whole tournament!

INTER-HOUSE GALA
The Inter-House gala was held on 18 March 2011. Team spirit was very high, helped in no small measure by the wearing of the new House T-shirts by spectators.

Led by enthusiastic cheerleaders, the girls cheered on their team swimmers. Judging the most spirited House was not an easy task, but eventually it was decided to award the Spirit Cup to Shepstone House.

Banks House swimmers proved too strong and ended the day as winners. Mrs de Sousa, the Guest of Honour, presented the prizes.

Well done to all who swam and to all the teachers who helped in making it a most successful gala. Thank you to all the parents who attended and supported the swimmers.
